Mt. Kailash – A Sacred Mountain In Tibet

Mt. Kailash is a mountain in the Kailash Range (Gangdise peaks), which figures element of the Trans Himalaya in Tibet. It locates near the foundation of some of the longest rivers in Asia: the Indus River, the Sutlej River (A major stream of the Indus River), the Brahmaputra River, and the Karnali River (a stream of the River Ganga). It is believed or considered a scared place in four religions; Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Bon. The mountain locates near Lake Manasarovar and Lake Rakshastal in Tibet.  The mountain is recognized as Kailash in Sanskrit. The word may be derived from the work Kelasa which means crystal.

In Hinduism

Lord Shiva the demolisher of ignorance and illusion resides at the top of a legendary mountain called Kailash where he sits in a state of unending meditation along with his wife Parvati.

In Buddhism

Tantric Buddhists consider that Mount Kailash is the home of the Buddha Demchok (also known as Demchog or Chakrasamvara), who symbolizes supreme bliss. There are many sites in the region connected with Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), whose tantric performances in holy sites around Tibet are credited with eventually establishing Buddhism as the main religion of the country in the 7th – 8thcentury.

In Jainish

Kailash is also recognized as Meru Parvat or Sumeru. Ashtapada, the peak next to Mt. Kailash, is the site where the first Jain Tirthankara Rishabhadeva, accomplished Nirvana or Moksha. 

In Bon

a religion which predates Buddhism in Tibet, preserve that the whole spiritual region and the nine-story Swastika Mountain are the seat of all spiritual power.

Every year, Thousands of people visit this pilgrimage site, following a custom going back thousands of years. Pilgrims of several religions consider that circumambulating Mount Kailash on foot is a holy ritual practice that will carry good fortune. The walk is made in a clockwise directing by Hindus and Buddhists. Followers of the Jain and Bon religions circumambulate the peak in a counterclockwise direction. The trail around Mt. Kailash is 52 Km long which starts and ends at Darchen and goes through Dirapuk & Zuthulpuk.

Apart from this, another adventure is to get to the Everest Base camp; which shows you a magnificent view of north face of Mt. Everest. Mt. Everest is the world’s highest peak stands up to 8848M.
